What is Stabilization?

Stabilization is the part of the detoxification process where the patient starts experiencing withdrawal symptoms after taking drugs, alcohol, or both.  During this stage, medical and psychotherapy is usually administered to prevent any form of harm to the client.  Stabilization is different for everyone.  It will vary depending on the type of substance and the amount of detoxification needed.  If necessary, doctors and clinicians can prescribe medication for addiction treatment to reduce withdrawal symptoms, as detoxing from certain substances can be difficult.

Stabilization treatment provides a safe ambiance in which a client may reduce withdrawal symptoms, cravings, psychiatric and medical symptoms before the transition to another program or element of structured treatment or recovery.  It requires medical supervision and clinical monitoring. The best approach is an individual-centered treatment model.  Our medical staff works with each person to develop a personalized treatment plan to stabilize and plan for recovery.

Together with detoxification, stabilization treatment help to stabilize individuals and give them the support to live successfully in the community. Patients who have completed detoxification are past the most severe symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol or opioids but are likely to experience less intense symptoms that affect their cognition and emotions for some time. These symptoms affect individuals’ ability to resist cravings, participate in treatment, and
establish treatment goals. This is according to the Center for Health Information and Analysis [1]

Importance of Stabilization

A return to substance abuse after a period of sobriety may qualify as a relapse.  It is one of the biggest dangers that people in recovery may experience.  But, the likelihood of continued relapse can be reduced greatly with the help of a stabilization program.

Our stabilization program at We Level Up FL helps clients develop tools to sustain sobriety.  The main goal is to help prevent relapse through educational and empowering treatments. This guides patients through potential triggers or relapse dangers and gives them the tools they need to combat them.  It gets to the root of relapse, addressing the issues and influences that often lead to relapse.

Relapse can sometimes be discouraging to a person who is in recovery.  This treatment program is offered to face lapses along the road to recovery.  We all make mistakes in life, and one mistake should not affect all your hard work.  Relapse should be seen as a bump in the road to recovery, and there is always hope to get back on track.  Moreover, through this program, patients will learn how to handle future challenging situations and manage drug cravings effectively.

Stages of Stabilization Program

The first phase of stabilization aims to monitor the acute medical situation or crisis, ensuring safety as the misused substance leaves the body. This is called withdrawal. Using medications to help the person could take place during this stage, but only if the medical team knows what drugs the person has taken.

The second phase of stabilization includes a more extended detox treatment plan.  This is to manage the next phase of the early withdrawal period and support the client in obtaining ongoing treatment for alcohol or drug abuse.  This may involve MAT (Medication-Assisted Treatment) plan.

The last phase of a stabilization plan might continue for days to weeks. The goal is making a successful transition to long-term treatment, often involving counseling, supportive “recovery” housing, and MAT.

Stabilization and Medically Assisted Detox

Stabilization plays a vital role in detoxification. Withdrawing from drugs and alcohol on your own can be life-threatening. Because of severe symptoms like heart palpitations and seizures, detox can be incredibly dangerous. That’s why a professional medical drug detox in a safe effective way is so important. It is the smart way to withdraw from substance abuse while lowering the risk of complications.

Among the top benefits of medical drug and alcohol detox is not only more safely withdrawing from drugs and alcohol but getting the support you need. So to lower relapse, overdose, and other health risks.

Inpatient medical detox and residential primary addiction treatment may be available at our affiliated facility at Level Up West Palm Beach Rehab. For some primary behavioral health treatment clients, medical detox and or addiction rehab may be required first.  If you have a co-occurring severe substance abuse diagnosis, please contact us prior to beginning inpatient mental health therapy. Treatment services may vary. Please call us to learn which treatment options are most suited for your individual needs.
