What is Detox Treatment?

Detoxification, or detox treatment, is the process of letting the body remove the drugs in it. The goal of drug detox is to minimize the potential physical harm that may result from quitting a drug (or drugs) after a sustained period of use.

However, a professional drug detox program, also sometimes referred to as medically assisted detox, entails using a set of interventions, such as medications and other therapies, to safely manage the side effects that accompany quitting drugs.  Detox treatment might not be easy, but the benefits of overcoming addiction far outweigh the negative side effects of detox.

Detox Treatment
A medically assisted detox is a comfortable detox.

Choosing to detox treatment at home can be deadly. Quitting “cold turkey” or without medical supervision can lead to severe issues such as seizures and severe dehydration. People with severe addictions should seek inpatient detox because withdrawal can be fatal. Inpatient detox includes 24-hour support and monitoring.

According to the National Center for Biotechnology and Information (NCBI) [1], inpatient treatment which primarily includes medically-assisted detox, are recommended but not limited to people with the following conditions:

  • Severe overdoses and serious respiratory depression
  • Withdrawal syndromes complicated by multiple drugs or a history of delirium tremens
  • Acute or chronic general medical conditions that could complicate withdraw
  • Co-occurring mental health disorder
  • Acute substance dependence and a history of nonresponse to other less intensive forms of treatment

Process of Detox Treatment

Everyone’s detox needs are different. The drug detox process helps people with substance use disorder to get personalized treatment. In most cases, the process involves three steps:

I. Evaluation

The medical team screens incoming clients for physical and mental health issues. Doctors use blood tests to measure the amount of drugs in the client’s system. This helps determine the level of medications needed.

There is also a comprehensive review of the drug, medical, and psychiatric histories. This information sets up the basis for the client’s long-term treatment plan.

II. Stabilization

The next step is to stabilize the client with medical and psychological therapy. The goal of stabilization is to prevent any form of harm to the client. Doctors can prescribe addiction treatment medications to prevent complications and reduce withdrawal symptoms.

III. Preparing Entry into Treatment

The last step of detox is the preparation for a treatment program. Doctors familiarize their clients with the treatment process and what to expect. Inpatient rehab offers the best chances of success after detox.

Common Side Effects of Drug Detox Treatment

Those undergoing drug detox may experience symptoms and side effects of drug withdrawal. Side effects will depend on the substance of choice, but common side effects of drug detox may include:

  • Mood changes such as mood swings, anxiety, depression, and agitation.
  • Body changes such as flu-like symptoms, shaking, nausea, and headaches.
  • Cravings, particularly for the drug they are attempting to quit.
